ref your recent article on: A good example of why Linux sucks –So you should also state that Win95a/b, Win2000 (still in use by thousands-mainly business & is on my older computer that I keep cause I like this OS) and soon to be WinXP Home, then WinXP Pro are Vaporware. I agree with your statement, although it takes donations to assist programmers to stay up in their OS’s/distrubtions, without this its all just a desire to do it and everyone losess a desire at times. I use Ubuntu & PCLinux and ArtistX(Ubuntu with goodies) on 3 different HD’s & yes I have donated to two of these fine OS’s, the third, well once I learn Debian alot more-I will-and yes I play at Linux (alot!), but I am Not going to keep paying for the hardware that Microsoft expects us to get in addition to their OS. Thank you for your emails articles.

You have to bear in mind that with Microsoft operating systems that you have many, many months of notice before a product is discontinued. People have known for well over a year that XP will be discontinued. When a product is discontinued, that’s not vaporware because you have ample warning time. With Linux, if there is no corporate support for the distribution, there is absolutely no warning when a particular distro will vanish into thin air – and that’s true vaporware.
My suggestion is that if you’re going to use a Linux distribution, use Ubuntu. It has corporate support (Canonical) and believe me, that matters a whole bunch. At least you know the time and effort into learning it won’t be wasted, as that OS will absolutely *not* vanish without a trace. This personally gives me confidence (and relief) that the Ubuntu product will be sticking around for a good long time.

Could I get a free membership for pointing out why sales are down?
You are charging $69.95 for one year and $189.95 for two year. It looks like a scam and must be fixed. Why would someone pay more for the 2 year agreement. 69.95 *2=139.90

Joe,
No. It is called a membership drive. The $69.95 is temporary. Normal price is $99.95. And, sales are not down.

Signed up for the Premium membership 10/18/09. My partners & I have just established our online privacy & security small business. Now that I no longer have tech access to all the techies in the corporate/govt. world, Yup I got to do a lot of stuff myself. Since the modern days of computerdom are so vast and sometimes complex it will certainly payoff to be a member. I’ve already found answers to issues that were driving me a little crazy. Thank you for the where with all for establishing a Premium Membership division. This will prove to be worth its weight in cyberspace GOLD for me.
Kudos To Dave & His Team!

We have been using Avanquest Fix it Utilities. I worked well and the updates lasted a year as promised. When the time came to renew the program, we decided to do it on the website. The cost shown was $19.95 US funds. No problem. We live in Canada and expected an exchange cost. The total was $61.54. Oops! They are based in England and had no problem screwing us out of our money. When we questioned them, they wanted a copy of our bank statement. Not happening!! We convinced our credit card company to look into this and they called it a fraud. Watch for Avanquest. They are in business to take every thing they can and will not give an inch. The big word is FRAUD. Don’t get me wrong, the program works well.

stupid poll!
PC Mech is great, thanks, I like it, this is why I subscribe.
But the poll ” What you use your PC for? ” is wrong!
Sure I can say which is my primary usage, but it is not the only one, precisele because it is a COMPUTER, and not a mechanical typewriter, which can only do a single thing!

I am an amateur extra, the highest level of ham license, and I disagree with your statement ask a ham if rf is safe re cellphones. The FCC concerns itself ONLY with thermal effects. Biological changes in cell cultures is an established fact re rf. Your protectors have demonstrated little interest.

I mentioned hams because they above all other people know everything there is to know about wireless communications, and are immediately accessible via one’s local ARRL chapter. If anybody wants to know the absolute truth on what a device against to your ear transmitting between 900MHz to 1100MHz would do to a human body (RF, thermal or otherwise), a ham knows. I trust the ham community explicitly in that respect. They are the people with the real answers because they use wireless more than anybody else.

Thanks for checking. I am able to access the site and have found lots of great information. I live in a “dead zone” and it is taking me a while to capture some of it.
Thanks for being there.

Good morning Dave. Loved your Jan 19th Newletter. Outstanding. I got a kick, of sorts, out of the “Rant” piece. (I probably should send pictures of my mess. LOL) I love screws. They tell me where to start and where to end. LOL Seriously. But, the real one that popped my eye was the front mounted USB ports. I have many computers doing many things, and none sit on the floor except one. three filing cabinets, three desks, all filled with computers and routers. I did happen on a great “A/B” box, so have 3 computers sharing one keyboard, mouse, monitor. The old OptiPlex with (hold onto something) Win98SE doesn’t care much for this arrangement, but too bad, its duties have been reduced to a level that makes it a secondary machine. I wanted to buy a couple more of those A/B boxes, but Best Buy ran out. The only computers that are truly doomed to the floor are the ones that are out of service. (much to the disgust of my wife) Take care and thanks for great reading.
