4 Page Rule

Posted Jun 15, 2006 by David Risley

A common issue that many web designers and developers have to take into consideration is how much content they are willing to display on one web page before carrying the content onto additionally pages. When I encounter similar dilemmas, I resort to executing the 4 page rule. Basically, this rule states that statistically people prefer not to read over 4 pages of content on one webpage and therefore it is advisable to keep the maximum length of one web page equivalent to that of 4 printed pages. Not only will the 4 page rule generate more activity on one’s site (as people open more web pages to continue reading a document), it helps ensure that the reader doesn’t get overwhelmed with the length of a webpage.
