Believe it or not, there are more games on the Chrome Web Store than just Angry Birds. I know, I found it shocking too. Know what’s even more surprising? Some of them are actually good. As in…really, really good. I suppose it’s not surprise, really.
I’ve compiled a list of games you should take a look at, if ever you’re bored and looking to waste an hour or two. Enjoy!
Realm Of The Madgod
What do you get if you combine a classic “Bullet Hell” shooter with a permadeath MMORPG and eight bit, Legend of Zelda-esque graphics? You get the Realm of The Madgod. After you fight some giant chicken for reasons which aren’t really explained (just roll with it), you’re shunted onto the Madgod’s island as…I don’t know, food for his minions, or something like that. The game’s fun, hectic and just the thing to kill a few hours of an afternoon if you’ve nothing better to do.
Steambirds: Survival
Steambirds: Survival is an aerial dogfighting turn based-strategy game. Sounds like a rather odd combination, doesn’t it? Thing is, it works. Very well, actually. After choosing your plane (different planes have different stats, abilities, and naturally, wildly different strategies), you battle increasingly difficult waves of enemies. The story is that you’re trying to fight off an invasion of the Axis’ Steam-tech armada and hold them off long enough for London to be evacuated. Honestly, though? The story kinda takes a back-seat to the game play, which is entertaining, unique, and actually rather challenging at points. The game gets extra props for the well-written story blurbs as well as the rather impressive soundtrack.
Monster Dash
Maybe strategy’s not your cup of tea. If that’s the case, Barry Steak’n'Fries, Bruce Campbell’s lesser known cousin, and a guy who’s rapidly shaping up to be a mascot of sorts for developer Halfbrick Games) can deliver, in Monster Dash. The premise is simple. For some reason, Barry’s running. And occasionally teleporting. But mostly running. He also has a shotgun. And sometimes a laser. Or a machine gun. Or a motorbike. Or a machine gun powerful enough to be a jetpack.
You’ve gotta control him as he dashes about, madly slaughtering supernatural creatures all across the world. And since he’s apparently not much in the motor control department, you’ve also gotta make sure he avoids spikes, pits, and walls.
Entanglement
If action, death, and wanton destruction aren’t really your thing, this game’s a good choice. The goal of Entanglement is to create as long and tangled a ‘path’ of red string as possible without it coming into contact with any walls. It’s simple, fun, and addictive. And the music that plays as you’re fiddling around with pre-set puzzle pieces, trying to find string that’ll give you the most points is sure to put anyone in a calmer state of mind.
Blight of The Immortals
Blight of the Immortals is a turn-based, real time strategy game. I mean literally real time. Turns take place over the course of hours (though there is an option to ‘skip ahead’ if you so choose). It’s a slow, careful game of strategy and diplomacy. Capturing territories nets you income and the ability to create units unique to that territory’s ‘race’. Territories can have their markets and walls upgraded up to five times. The wall provides a defense bonus based on its upgrade level, and a market provides more income the more it’s upgraded. Blight of the Immortals is a “Freemium” game so not all the features are going to be available to you when you first start playing.
I myself only played the single player game, but I found it extremely addictive. If you’re even somewhat taken by strategy games, then give this one a try.
