They usually just get in the way and they never know more about the product than I do, after thoroughly researching the item on the internet. I have been fed some of the biggest lines of bullpoop by sales people who were either lying or ignorant. BTW, I find it ironic that there is a BestBuy advertisement, not once but twice in this web page. :D I usually try to avoid sales people. Don't allow the store assistant to push the item that they want you to buy onto you either; or you could end up paying a lot more than you'd hoped for a product of identical or lesser quality. - Not all stores are totally ethical; especially if they get the idea that you haven't done your homework properly beforehand.
