A Tool To Help Get Your Desktop Icons Under Control

Everyone knows it is unsightly to have tons of icons and documents on your desktop, yet somehow it always seems to happen to everyone (with the exception of the extremely disciplined). If this is a problem you have, a tool which can help get this under control is Fences.

Fences is a nifty free tool which allows you to create a small “fenced in” area where you can store shortcuts and documents. Each fence has a set size (which you can resize) and becomes scrollable as needed. There is a video demo on the product’s site which shows exactly how it works.

I started using this a couple of days ago and it really is helpful. So if your desktop is getting out of control, Fences can help you get organized again.

What about the fact that it’s a really bad idea to save documents to your desktop? Unless Windows 7 has changed this, then saving documents on your desktop is just bad practice. It’s far too easy to lose important documents if your profile becomes corrupt.

Lots of items on the desktop does impact performance slightly, but people do it anyway.
If your profile becomes corrupt you would potentially lose your my documents as well which is part of your profile structure. Regardless, that is what backups are for.

    Windows 3.1 returns!

The desktop is so inefficient. I only use it temporarily for quick turnarounds. But it’s true…people just won’t give it up.

I am one of these people who actually likes lots of icons on my desktop. Yeah I know your not supposed to do that and it looks really uncool if you are a geek.

    This is a fantastic program.

    Thanks Jason!

I agree with David M. This is AWESOME!!!
I backup all the time and am not concerned about corruption of any kind!!!
If worse comes to worse I’ll reload everything.
