Alt-Tab

Posted Oct 15, 2004 by David Risley

Today’s tip is quite simple, but I had been using Windows for a few years before I came to know about it. Today, I use it all the time. In fact, I spend so much time on the PC these days that my fingers are constantly using shortcuts. When you get to where you know your keyboard shortcuts, you can really do things a lot faster.

You can switch between open programs quickly in Windows by pressing Alt-Tab at the same time. When you do so, a little pane will shwo up mid-screen with the icons of each open window. Holding the Alt button and pressing Tab will cycle through each program. When you release the buttons, the selected window will then be your active window. To shift the other direction, just use Shift-Alt-Tab. This is a time saver and is much faster than selecting the right window from your taskbar.
