Google might not have the marketing mojo of Apple, but they have created a video to show off the Android platform a little bit. They have also announced a $10 million prize (or bribe?) to developers to create great apps for the platform.
Now, Robert Scoble makes the mistaken assumption that this means the API is “uninspired”. He also says that this will not give Apple a run for it’s money with it’s Iphone. Give me a break, Robert. This platform was only announced last week. And let’s consider the motives of the two companies. Apple has done everything it can tightly control the Iphone. It has tied the phone to AT&T, for one. Second, it actively BATTLES developers who try to create for the device. Every firmware update is designed to break third-party apps for the phone. What kind of horsecrap company does that? Oh yeah, Apple.
On the other hand, Google is coming out within the first week encouraging people to develop for the device.
Yeah, as Scoble correctly points out, “Steve Jobs treats developers like crap”. Well, I’d argue that, on this Iphone thing, they treat their customers like crap, too.
Yes, Apple is releasing a developer SDK in 2008 for the Iphone. We’ll see how that does. But, personally, I think the way they have dealt with this leaves ample territory for a Gphone device.
