ATI Radeon 9700 Pro

Final Ratings

Highs

  • Fastest card, period

  • Upgrade-proof

  • DirectX9 ready

  • Hydravision is still cool

  • Great image quality

Lows

  • Budget gamers need not apply

  • Some compatibility issues

What more can we say about this card?  It is flat out the fastest card on the market, bar none.  We have been gaming on the Radeon 9700 Pro for several weeks now, and the drivers are rock solid, and the gaming performance is utterly amazing.  Image quality is second to none, and the new Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering modes are just beautiful to look at.  If you enjoy flight sims, be ready for scenery that looks awesome, and runs at 1600×1200 smoothly.  Perhaps the best feature of the Radeon 9700 Pro has not even been released yet.  Full DirectX 9 compliance means that you can buy this card, and not worry about being obselete in six months.  I have been in contact with ATI about the compatibility issues we had with out test system, but rest assured that this card did work in four other systems I tried it in.  Yes, compatiblity issues suck, but when you are riding the bleeding edge of technology like the 9700, it’s bound to happen.  ATI has finally toppled the NVIDIA speed crown; now we can sit back and wait for the NV30 sparks to fly.
