I was going to write something
useful about this, but I have no clue what I meant to write here last
week, so I’m just going to talk about Bill Gates. By the way,
this was planned…yeah…that’s it…planned ::wink wink::
Is he jumping ship? Is he sick
and tired? Is he getting back to his roots? Well, in my
honest opinion, its all of the above. He’s sick and tired of
running a HUGE company that takes crap from the Government and us (me)
all the time. On top of that, he realizes that the Government
wants to split his company up 3 ways, (I always thought Reno was a
bitch anyway) so he wants to get while the getting is good. So
what does he do? He gives CEO-ship to the same person he gave
Presidential powers to a while ago. Now, he’s not involved with the
running of the company, but he’s still THE BOSS because he owns
majority stock, and is Chairman of the board (along with that Lead
programmer crap, but who cares about that, Windows 3.1 wasn’t all that
great anyway…) So, he goes back to his roots, which he loves
anyway, in order to avoid being the lead dog during the fall of the
dynasty. I must say this to Bill: Thanks for all the good
times, you sure have given the computer industry something (I’m not
saying it’s good, because we never know what it would have been like
if you didn’t make Windows) but, for now, leave the programming to the
people that know what they are doing. You’ve got enough cash to
buy a small Pacific island (or a national park) and live there in
peace. I personally don’t know how the company is going to end
up…but to tell you the truth, I would have done the same thing in
your shoes, but I would have looked better doing it. For some
reason cream pie just isn’t my color
Second Fundamental Theorem of
Computing
The only thing that holds the press back is malice. If they
publish with malice, which is publishing with the knowledge that
something is not true, just to ruin the reputation of another, it is
illegal. What I am about to do is not malice, because it is
true. All of it.
No matter what a salesman tells you,
there is no deal in his booth.
Salesmen, besides lawyers, used car salesmen, bankers, politicians,
Ricky Martin, and Janet Reno, are the lowest people in earth.
Especially those damn computer salesmen. I attended a computer
expo (www.supercomputersale.com)
on Friday the 7th, and you know what, it really sucked ass! I
bought nothing! There was this one salesman. (PC
Adventures. Phone number available if you wish to call them and
bitch. Fax also available) I can’t even explain this
asshole, lemme just give you a quote
“The K6-2 500MHz is the
fastest chip AMD Makes right now.”
That was told to a unsuspecting
customer at this expo. YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!! I interrupted
and mentioned the K6-3. He said the yields were so low, they had
to turn the L2 cache off and sell them as K6-2s. WE ALL KNOW
THIS IS NOT TRUE. So I stated that AMD sent me a press release
(which they did) that they are making the K6-2+ soon, which will be a
K6-2, with 128KB of L2 onboard. He denied that. Then, I
pulled out my shotgun, theoretically, and mentioned the AMD Athlon,
which, as we all know, kicks any and all Intel CPUs thrown at
it. He also denied the existence of that. Then I mentioned
whom I was as I extended my right arm in a handshake. Mind you I
“padded” my position here just a little. I’m not the
Assistant Webmaster, although my Editor-in-chief responsibilities
sometimes include things a webmaster would do:
“Hello, I’m M. A. Dockter,
Editor-in-chief and Assistant Webmaster of the PC Mechanic
Network. I receive AMD press releases before the sellers even
know of a chip because of my position with PC Mechanic. I know
of no such yield problems with the K6-3, and I also know it’s
impossible to just ‘turn off’ the L2 Cache in the K6-3.(See note at
bottom)”
Needless to say, Security came and
got me, he lost a lot of sales, and I got kicked out of another
computer related sales establishment (Best Buy was #1, check out http://www.pcmech.com/dockter.htm
to find out more.) The only thing that saved me from disorderly
conduct charges (WHAT DISORDERLY CONDUCT?!?!?) was my frequent
mentioning of the Better Business Bureau, again.
I can now add another title to my
name. M. A. Dockter, Editor-in-chief, and consumer right’s
activist. Just remember, vote Ralph Nader for President on the
Green Party Ticket!
NOTE: I found it
to be possible to turn off the L2 Cache on the K6-3 with
software. I thought, before, that it was only possible to do by
re-wiring the core, which would not be cost efficient. But,
there is a point to this. That salesman was scared when I said
that,
which means he didn’t know it either. My point still remains,
that I was dealing with a crooked salesman. I am sorry for any
problems I caused by publishing non factual information. Once
again, I thought the L2 could only be turned off by changes to the CPU
core.
