Introduction

I have been working online for almost 10 years now. I have been familiar with the internet since before the concept of a website really existed. Back in those days, there was no such thing as a www or a dot-com. You connected to what was called a Bulletin Board System (BBS) and you did so using a phone number. You would literally dial a phone number to connect to the BBS and you would browse the BBS using a text interface. Obviously, this is a far cry from the websites we use today.

Being that I have worked online for so long, I obviously understand the way things work. Anybody, like myself, who works in this field also understands how things work. The problem is that those of us who sit down to write a book about it are doing so from that position. It is really hard to sit down and write a book from the perspective of a person that has absolutely no idea how the internet works.

I have talked to several people who were working to put a site on the internet. A common frustration was that other books seemed to assume the reader already knew certain things. Perhaps they did. Even if they didn’t, the reader was left with that impression which tells me that something in that book was over their head.

By now, you probably see what my purpose is with this course. My aim is to really break it all down and explain how to go from knowing absolutely nothing about the internet to running your own website. I do not intend to make you an expert in this field. That would, quite literally, take quite a volume to pull off. What I do intend is to explain how to get started in this field, stripping out all complexities and getting right to the basics.

This subject is a simple one, yet a new one. That means that a perfectly smart person might still lack that basic understanding to pull it off. If one lacks understanding of the basics, it’ll be really hard to build from there. One needs a solid foundation before they can build a skyscraper.

So, I will keep this course informal and to-the-point. Now, let’s get started.
