Case Mod (Plexiglas Window Installation)

This particular case mod, provided by Coolerguys, is as simple as they come. The kit includes a sheet of plexiglas(acrylic), 4 plastic frame pieces, screws, washers and threaded sleeves. It includes very detailed instructions that even the most countrified layperson can understand. Heck, even I didn\’t have much of a problem.

Here are the steps, in order, for you to put a window in the side of your computer case:

  • Choose the side panel you wish to cut. (Most people opt for the left hand side of the case if the front is facing you.)

  • Position the panel. (Some cases are too short to put the 8\” X 10 1/2\” window in vertically, so you can either put it in with the longest portion in the up to down position, or in the left to right position.)

  • Place the acrylic window flat on the case panel at least 2 1/5\” from the left edge of the panel and 1 1/2\” from the bottom edge of the panel.

  • Trace a guideline around the outside of the acrylic window and mark the 8 holes so you know where to drill for your screws.

  • Measure in from each guideline approximately 3/8\”, make marks and draw straight lines to connect the marks. (This will be the final window dimensions.)

  • Using a 7/32 drill bit (#2) drill out the 8 holes you marked earlier.

It should look something like this

  • Cut out the 8\” X 10 1/2\” opening using a jig-saw, roto-zip, dremel, chain saw or whatever tools you have access to. (Don\’t really try to use a chain saw. That was my feeble attempt at humor.)

  • Smooth out the jagged edges left from the cutting process.

It will look similar to this

  • Insert the threaded screw sleeves into the holes from the inside-out. (A roll of Scotch tape might come in handy to hold the sleeves in place while you\’re putting the window and frame in place.)

  • Peel the protective layers off of each side of the acrylic window.

  • Lay the acrylic window on the outside of the case.

  • Lay the black plastic frame in place over the window.

  • Insert the screws into all 8 holes and tighten until nice and snug. (Don\’t pull out the torque wrench on this step. Tightening too much can crack the acrylic.)

Now it\’s shaping up

  • Stare at the innards of your computer case through your brand new snazzy looking window! (Batteries not included)
