There is CheckUserNames; this site will check the username you want on 160 different web sites. Absolutely no registration is required to use CheckUserNames. All you have to do is go there, punch in a username, check, and the site does the rest.

I just tried a couple of usernames I'm using all over the web (or at least, I thought so). They're available on all sites checked. This web site didn't find a single one I use so I don't think it's very handy.
If the username checked had an underscore, dash or period in it, I don't know if CheckUserNames “understands” usernames that contain those properly or not.
