Like any geek, I’ve got a closet full of stuff that I just don’t use anymore. But, it is good stuff. Might be a little old, but hell – it is cool and it is free. To you, anyway…
So, I’m going to hold some giveaways, and this week I am going to start out with 5 items.
OK, so what do you need to do to enter? Just leave a comment on this blog post that answers this question:
If you could learn how to do one thing with your computer, what would it be?
When this contest ends on Monday, November 10th, I will go through all entries and pick the ones I like best.
Now, I’m going to throw in some optional bonuses here. These are some things which you can do and I’ll give your submission more weight if you do them. They are:
- Follow me on Twitter. If you’re already following me, you’re one step ahead. If not, feel free.
- Befriend me on Facebook.
- Become a fan of PCMECH on Facebook.
- Create a quick video testimonial telling us what you think of PCMECH, why you came here, etc. You can post that video anywhere you want. Be creative – it is YOUR video. But, since it takes a few more minutes to do up a video, I’m giving more points for this one. Obviously, doing a video might be worth your while!
A video submission is sure to make your entry stand out to me. And for those of you who do a video, I will be giving away a one-year membership to PCMech University to the best one. So, not only do you increase your chances of winning one of these items, but you can join our premium membership program as well. And don’t worry – if you are already a paid member of our site, I will extend your current membership one year at no charge.
But, alas, if you cannot or don’t feel like making a video, that’s fine. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post answering the question above.
One last thing…
Since these possible bonus actions can be on multiple sites, you’re going to need to post links in your comment on this post to your Twitter profile, your Facebook profile, and your video. Just copy the URLs and paste them right into your comment on this post. If you don’t do this for me, I might not actually see your points.
I will be ending this contest on Monday of next week. When I do, I’ll review your answers to this question. I’ll be looking for solid input that we can actually use to provide value to this website. And I will give extra weight to your submission if you do any of the actions laid out above. And if you make a video – dude! – you’ll be cool!
Hopefully that’s not too difficult for anybody to figure out. I try to do something unique for every giveaway.
So, tell us what one thing you want to learn how to do with your computer.

Hmm, I’m not sure what I’d like to learn, though probably something like programming sites in PHP, or game development. I already know some PHP, but I mainly know HTML, which isn’t so great for web 2.0 stuff.
I also may be taking a game development course in college soon. But I guess this is sort of a survey for pcmech users in disguise, no?

One question, how will you decide who gets what? Does one person win everything, is it a random thing, or do the winners get to choose?
Some form of the Internet is the future. We will need to know how to design effective websites to conduct business. The addition of PayPal and Credit usage, shopping carts, chat rooms or forums. The website design needs a thorough step by step tutorial to include the items listed above. My cancer has forced me out of the work place but I still want to be productive and my computer is my only means of survival since I have to work from home due to my treatments. Internet Internet Internet!
I would like to use install Wireless/USB cameras which run on motion detection to monitor my home (overcoming USB 5m cable length is a problem together with know how on using wireless USB network card)
Basically, I would love to be able to be given a computer that has crashed, be able to diagnose the problem and to be able to fix it immediately.
I’d love to know how to restore a system without backup disks.
John,
It’s not as hard as you think to build them. I took a class on and the first thing the instructor said is that you are not going to fix anything you replace it. And that taught me how to build one.
I get old computers from the Technical Institute and return them so they can be passed on to other students. Check with the schools in your area and also the computer clubs. Post an ad on Craigs List and also join local freecycle groups.
Good luck.
The one thing I would learn to do is master the registry. That is a skill that could be turned into an earning.
Given a choice of “one thing” that I would like to do better, then that would have to be to become an “expert” in Windows Registry. Having been involved in computers since 1981, I’ve repaired many problems by “hacking” the registry. I’ve been lucky more than not, but sometimes I have to revert to a restore point, or a full backup in the older days. Even though I’ve edited the Registry countless times to fix problems or remove difficult software, I know that I’ve barely scratched the surface of it’s intricacies; learning them and how to utilize them to the maximum would be the ideal “one thing” to learn.

I would like my pc to pay for my internet costs without selling a product i have to constantly email ppl or users i have join a club or pay a membership to. Money is tight in this economy so i cant just join sites at will to learn pc or repairs and about technology
I would like to know how to take a cluttered operating system like Vista, and stream line it into an efficient OS like Ubuntu. I like my surroundings to be simple. I just want the basic functions so I can build from there. I don’t need or want a lot of the bloatware that comes on systems these days. I would go with one of the lesser known systems, but I would run into compatibility issues. I want to be able to take a OS with a clean slate and add the features I need.
I have the solution to that:
1. Uninstall Vista.
2. Format.
3. Install Ubuntu.
Target Neutralized.
hm… if I could learn one thing what would it be? I would learn to source code. I would do this because then I could use my knowledge to help my fellow peers in the open source world.
I would attempt to make a computer with the ability to learn what to do with me.
I would feel more balanced in the industry if I could operate more from the command line in Ubuntu and utilize scripting within a Windows environment.

Being the dinosaur that I am, the sheer fact that I am even able to post a reply comes as somewhat of a shock to me. I would truly love to learn how to create and maintain a website with the ultimate goal being able to help my girlfriend who suffers form lupus start her oown online candy and confections delivery company so she doesn’t have to rely on the government for any assistance. Well, enough of that…I think I also did the facebook thing…let’s see
