Cleaning Up Your MP3 Library

Taking a leap of faith (assumption), most of us probably have lots of MP3 music files which we manage in a media player library of some kind. If so, over time if left to its own devices your library can become rather disorganized or inconsistent. When this happens it may be time to do some housekeeping.

A good article covering this topic is: How To: Clean Up Your MP3 Library. This article covers everything you need to do when organizing your library:

  • Fixing Incorrect Tags
  • Finding Missing Album Art
  • Leveling Your Tracks

The author has a specific set of tools they use/recommend, but the process should be the same regardless of your tools of choice.

Does anyone have any other suggestions you would make for cleaning up your MP3 library?

I usually delete the lot and start again!

I wouldn’t delete all of mine! I have some rare and irreplaceable music. I usually go through about twice a year and clean up, but it takes several days to do it. I have well over 80,000 songs for my DJ business and 600 karaoke cd’s too. I’m going to try your idea and see if I can’t cut my organizational time down some.

Wow, with 50,000 songs I thought I had a lot. Neither of us can erase everything and start from scratch. I wish with iTunes that I could make a macro to do different things related to organizing, labeling and filtering. I dont see how I could take music out of iTunes, do things to my library with Media Monkey, and then put it back in iTunes. When you put the same music back in you get duplicates and 50,000 duplicates would take forever to delete. With an iPod, you have no choice but to use iTunes.

i think by erase and start again the poster meant to just remove all from the library of the software and then readd all files to remove the dudd files and ones that have been renamed etc. i don’t think deleting music off your hard-drive is ever the way forward

WOW! I may just have to purchase Media Monkey! Fanfreakintastic!
