Comments Now On Disqus

Today, PCMech has switched over to the Disqus (pronounced “discuss”) comment system. Some of you have used that system before, but many of you haven’t, so here’s a quick Q-and-A on using it.

Does it require you to sign up for an account?

No. Using a Disqus account is completely optional. If you want to post comments the old way, you can still do so.

What type of accounts does Disqus support?

If you do decide to use one, you have several options. You can use your existing Facebook, Twitter, OpenID or Yahoo! login if you like.

Is PCMech made aware of my login information if I use Facebook, Twitter, OpenID or Yahoo?

No. The different login methods are there strictly for convenience, and we are not sent any of the user credential information.

What’s OpenID?

OpenID is something that’s been around for a while that serves as a “unified login” of sorts. You probably already have an OpenID and didn’t even know it as it’s supported by several major web services including Google, MySpace and AOL to name a few.

To learn how to use an OpenID, follow the instructions here, and then you can use it for commenting on this site if you wish.

What’s the advantage of using an account instead of the old way?

The single largest advantage is convenience. Instead of having to input your name and email address every time you want to comment, you can use a login for another web service you already have instead.

Will you be spammed by using a login instead of the old way?

No. Your email address is not revealed for any comment you make, therefore you will not be spammed. The only emails you will receive from using the system are notifications (ex: when someone replies to your comment, you are notified by email).

Will other changes be coming to PCMech?

Yes. This is one of several improvements that are being rolled out. Watch for more good stuff coming soon!

  1. Well, I've been reading Disqus for months and thinking it was “diskwoos.” Now I know it's discuss, and I feel stupid. :)

  2. entreeweb /

  3. I really like this change because now I'll know when somebody replies to me :D Before you had to remember to check back to see if someone did and I never remembered to do that xD
