Copy The Text From A Windows Message Box

A little known trick that you can do with a standard Windows message box is to copy the text displayed. For example, when you get an error message dialog and you want to search to see what might cause it, just do the following:

  1. Click on the message box.
  2. Press Ctrl + C.
  3. Open Notepad.
  4. Press Ctrl + V.

When you do this, you should see all the text from the message box appear. This is great trick to know when error messages are cryptic as you do not have to retype the text. Additionally, you can use this instead of creating screenshots to send to tech support (who can then simply copy-paste the text).

This works in almost every standard Windows message box (if an application has it own message box dialog, it may not work) and can be a great key saver.
