Crime Mapping Makes Finding Crime Statistics Easy

Planning to move? Many people are. When moving to a new area, knowing the crime statistics is very good information to have. Previously, the best place to get crime statistics was from Google Earth, but unfortunately that feature was removed since version 5 of the software.

All is not lost however because there is CrimeMapping. This web site lists crime statistics in a way that’s easy and informative. You can zoom in right down to street level to see exactly what type of crimes happened, when and where.

Example:

Crimes are shown as icons that can be clicked. On click a speech bubble appears telling you what the crime was, where and the exact time it was reported.

To note, this is a relatively new thing. Most US states and Canada should have the crime statistics information you’re looking for. If an area is not listed, check your local town government web site to see if they have a crime map (they should.) If they don’t, you can write, email or call your local county government office and suggest they contact CrimeMapping as it would be valuable information for local and non-local residents.

Another place you can go for a complete package of data on a place is http://www.city-data.com. It has tons of info, including crime data. The only problem is the crime data is supplied by the cities, which might not want to be as forthcoming with the crime info as they should be. The don’t want to scare off a potential resident by disclosing all of the crime statistics. That reason would probably be the same reason you might not get much of a response from the city if you email or write them for the info. Crime levels are not really a highlight in the city brochure or website. :)
