Cuil is a search engine (pronounced "cool"). Yeah, I know, everyone uses Google, right? Well now you’ve got something else. It may not be as expansive as Google as far as scope is concerned, but the way in which Cuil works is actually pretty darned cool – and functional.
Here’s a search for PCMech using Cuil. I like this far better than the way Google shows search results. It’s cleaner, easier to find stuff, you’ll see images (nice touch) and results are shown in a grid instead of a scroll-for-years typical Google result.
Bear in mind Cuil is very new and still in the process of indexing, but I guarantee you’ll like it.
And can you imagine a home page even less sparse than Google’s. Cuil is it. It’s simple. And simple is good.

Sorry Rich, but I got one word for this site – BLEH! I don’t see it as being cleaner in any way. That is the most un-userfriendly layout of a search engine I’ve ever seen! The search produced 4 links within that search with identical text… “David Risley, the founder of PCMech.. He is the brains, the thinker, the writer, the nerd.”
What a waste of space on the page!
Thanks for the review on Cuil but I, like most likely many others, will stick with Google. Been using it since the beta testing days and will continue to use it unless something better comes along.
Apparently Cuil was not quite ready for launch during the first day or two – many medium long tail queries did not return results at all, and even general queries returned way fewer results than they should have considering Cuil’s claims of having indexed so many pages already. They did improve somewhat afterward, however, and seem to be picking up more results and increasing relevance as more people have been testing out the engine.
In the long run, I hope they get things together and perform well enough to compete with the major search engines and then maybe do some advertising. I would like to see more serious competitors to Google in order to hold their power in check and encourage more transparency overall.
Don’t waste your time…

This product needs some serious work before it is a viable/competitive search engine.
