Disable Windows XP Security Center Notifications

Posted Feb 5, 2006 | by David Risley

This is one annoyance that I have been extremely glad to fix on my computer. After updating Windows, you might get a little shield icon on the bottom right of your computer screen that pops up every once in a while and says that your computer may be at risk. You may not have a firewall enabled or updated virus scan software, but if these are things you have set up intentionally, then use this tip to disable the notifications:

On the left side of the Security Center Window, look for something that says “Change the way Security Center Alerts Me”. Click this, and when the new window pops up, uncheck every single box if you do not wish to see the annoying notification message pop up ever again. If you need a reminder to go find anti-virus software, then you can leave that box checked until then.

Even if you have anti-virus software or a firewall enabled, the Security Center may not detect it and continue to pop up until you disable it as shown above.

Which Of These Traits Applies To YOUR Computing Life?...

    Thank you !!

I too was at the end of my tether trying to get Microsoft’s ever too eager %^&$ notifications to quit pestering me. (Don’t it remind you of that yappy little dog in the cartoon — “What’re we gonna do now Spike, huh? Huh ?”) Of course I tried XP’s “help” utility, which gave the expected result. (Who says you can never achieve absolute zero?) The good things in life never change. So off it was to Google and from there to your website, where the answer was provided instantly. “How could I have missed that option on the Security Shield menu?” I asked myself. Easy: with all the needless junk and self-adulation Microsoft clutters their operating systems with, one eventually gets blind to anything that doesn’t look like an obvious local menu item. Thanks again. Looks like you have a good site here, and I think I’ll check out your subscriptions. Even if I don’t want any more email than I already get, I’m ready to dig out my wallet in thanks for the invaluable little instruction I’ve just received.

    regards
    DS
