I invited Diskology to respond to the review and here is that response, posted for information purposes for our readers:
Thanks for reviewing the Disk Jockey, David. It’s always great to have somebody look it over with a fine toothed comb! At the risk of sounding like I’m whining, I’d love to simply address a few of the points that you brought up in your review:
1. Tight Molex connectors – This is definitely something that we’ll keep an eye on. We test each Disk Jockey (DJ) in the lab using a few drives that have been plugged and unplugged literally thousands of times so this is something that we haven’t seen personally. The connectors are fairly standard but this definitely might be an area that we can do some digging to see if there are connectors available with a little more “play.” Connector manufacturers contact me!
2. Short Cables – This one we have heard before so we offer both 6″ and 12″ cables on our web site for a pretty nominal charge. If you buy them at the time of your DJ purchase we’ll even install them for you if you’d like.
3. Price – Ahh, a double-edged sword
We’re actually competing with a couple of products that were primarily designed for the forensic market. Those two products run around $745 and $1195 respectively. So admittedly we thought we priced the DJ quite aggressively. HOWEVER, I hear you loud and clear. We are trying to reach everybody from the forensic expert to the SOHO support guy to the IT manager of major corporations so in some cases we’re being accused of being “too cheap” while in others we are being accused of being too expensive. Hopefully people will drop by our testimonials page and see how people are using the DJ for a variety of tasks and they can see that the DJ can quickly save them time which typically saves / makes them money. One other item of note, the street price on the unit, if you hit our resellers sites, is under $300.
4. LED – OK, you got me on this one!
Yes, the read out could be better but this is an area that, had we gone LCD, would have raised the price significantly. Not just the fact that the LCD screen would cost more, but the engineering behind it would cause us to start getting into the territory price-wise of our competitors. Bottom line (in our opinion) is that the we designed the DJ to be powerful, yet fairly idiot-proof. You plug some drives in, chose a mode, press a button and it completes a task.
Thanks for the opportunity to respond to the review. Hopefully people with specific questions won’t “wonder if it does this or that,” they’ll simply drop us an email and find out for sure.
