EA Shutting Down Online Play For Several Games

image If you’re a gamer, you probably are pretty much hating EA right now. In less than a month from now, EA will be discontinuing internet multi-play ability for several titles in February 2010.

Where the real kick in the face happens is on the games that have "09" in the title of them. This means that for any of the EA titles on the list you bought that were released in 2009 (or mid-to-late 2008) will no longer have online play as of next month – less than a year later.

Ouch.

Granted, for most of the titles people will say, "Well, I didn’t really play those games anyway.. so no big deal." That’s all well and good, but do you think it’s right to spend your cash on a game that promotes online play only to have it yanked from under your feet in less than a year? That’s not very fair to you, is it?

And by the way, it affects all types of consoles. PC, Wii, Xbox and PlayStation.

The only bright spot to this is that EA at least tells you it’s going to happen. It still sucks, but at least they don’t pull the plug on certain servers without any notice.

The boom will be laid down on February 2 and 9. See the list here. And if you have any of the games on that list, you won’t be able to play them online at all after those dates.

I’m assuming Evony is on the list. doesn’t sound to good for the people who have put a lot of time into there accounts. Iwas thinking about joining evony at one point.

I did not see Evony on the list. It was all sports games.

@Apple Tablet – Um, Evony and EA have no relation ;)

What is the reason for them to pull the plug on the online gaming servers? Is it due to cost or are they tired of gamers running cracked copies of their games or…?

It seems odd to pull the plug on it just to do it. I don’t much online ( I only play QuakeLive occasionally) so this doesn’t really affect me at all. I was just curious.

Your first assumption is correct, cost. It costs money for the hardware, the data connectivity and most of all the paid staff (usually the biggest expense).

Apple Tablet- Why randomly post irrelevant comments after an article like this? Is it a way to post your website in an effort to raise traffic?

also found out that if you upgrade your system too many times with undercover you get a reg too many times error and so far 3 weeks without a answer. Bad – very bad when you own every nfs game even before porshe unleeshed or hot pursute.
If they do this with shift witch I just purchased I wont purhase another for any platform from them.
Speakin of wich if I cant get undercover to work I wont buy but as they close the games I will hack them to work.
Not fair for a 49 to 69 dollar game – how much do they need and where is the support for so much money.

I could own a software company that does game for what I have spent over the years.
And I am the kind their mony realy coms fom after owning a xbox.2 xbox 360′s. many pc’s.play station 1 and 2. and alot of others.
