Facebook’s idea of privacy is so laughable at this point that it’s almost a running joke, and a really bad one at that because the joke’s on us. Even so, people still use the site in droves because, um.. well.. we don’t know exactly why, but they do.
It was only a matter of time before someone whipped up an anti-Facebook add-on for a browser to keep Facebook’s meat hooks out of our digital lives, and now it exists: Facebook Disconnect for Google Chrome. This extension is less than 3 days old and has already been downloaded and installed 25,000+ times.
What does this extension do exactly? According to the description:
"Facebook Disconnect blocks all traffic from third-party sites to Facebook servers, but still lets you access Facebook itself."
Does it work? According to the comments on the download page it does. Users of this extension are very happy with it because it does what it’s supposed to.
A few quick questions answered:
"Why would I need this if I already use an ad blocker?"
Many third-party sites Facebook uses are not blocked by your ad blocker, because if they did there would be no reason for this Chrome extension to exist.
"Is the flow of my personal information from Facebook to third-party sites really that bad?"
Unfortunately, yes, it really is that bad if you use Facebook.
"Okay, so this Chrome extension should only be used if I use Facebook?"
Correct. If you don’t use Facebook, you don’t need this extension. But if you do, this extension is a must-have install. Why? Because Facebook’s privacy policies are a joke.
