One of the newer features on Weather Underground is the ability to see weather using a first-person-shooter style environment. No, you don’t get to actually shoot anything (if you could that would certainly be different), but you do get the 3D environment using your mouse and W, A, S and D keyboard keys.
As far as the usefulness of this, well.. I’ll be honest, it’s not as good as traditional 2D. We’ve been using 2D maps for so long that while 3D does have "cool" factor to it, you’re better informed of storm systems on a map using 2D.
There is something else to bear in mind however – this is truly one of those "living in the future" things. I remember years ago those that proclaimed that in the future, we could travel through maps and see weather patterns in a complete three-dimensional environment – all from a computer at home!
Well, we have it. Although it’s not as exciting as we thought it would be. ![]()
To access one of these 3D radar maps, simply punch in a location at Weather Underground, click the radar screen and then the link for 3D radar. You will be required to install the Unity Web Player once, which is not harmful to your PC.
