France Puts US To Shame With Their Wireless Offering

french-flag How does a small wireless carrier in France get three million subscribers in just three months? Offer a "dumb pipe" plan that gives you everything for only $25 a month, as in unlimited voice, unlimited text, 3GB of fair-use bandwidth and unlimited Wi-Fi hotspot access to over 5 million points, and – get this – unlimited tethering at no additional charge.

This basically amplifies how bad you get screwed in the US with our wireless plans. Now some of you may think, "3GB of bandwidth doesn’t sound like much.." I’ll give you that, but remember the price point. 25 bucks a month. I’d sign up for that in a second if it were available here.

  1. Actually we have Republic Wireless. I am involved in their beta test. They are offering UNLIMITED everything, voice, text and data, NO caps for $19.00 a month plus taxes. No contract. They are opening up their beta this summer.

    • I tried it myself and returned it. Really slow internet, strong echo when making calls, can only use one phone. Much happier with the nexus on my current company.

      • I haven’t experienced any of those problems and with each update things are getting better. I am not a very heavy user of data on the go, but I am a EE working in the RF industry so I am sensitive to audio quality and operational glitches during beta testing and they don’t bother me, or they haven’t bothered me yet.

  2. Is any of it subsidized by the taxpayers?

  3. Republic Wireless is only putting out a beta test, and so it’s inevitable that their services aren’t as stellar as consumers would to be just yet. Hopefully, they take consumer feedback and incorporate it into their business strategies before formally launching their brand.
