Free Remote Connection Software

When it comes to remote connection (either attended or unattended), there are several choices you have: Terminal Services (for Windows users), VNC, commercial services, etc. just to name a few. If you do not have something in place already, take a look at TeamViewer.

This free service (for non-commercial use) allows you to both share your computer desktop with others or take control of another computer. The benefits are obvious as you can show someone how to do something or actually do it for them. One great feature about TeamViewer, however, is that it does not require any software installation (for live connection, unattended access requires installation) in order to connect to a client. Additionally, like most other commercial products, firewalls do not present any problems so nobody has to worry about lingering security implications.

TeamViewer is not revolutionary, so while there are many products available which accomplish the same thing, find the tool you like and stick with it.

I know there are many PC Remote Access choices out there, including Proxy Networks, TechInLine and TeamViewer, all of which have versions which are free with multiple security layers, user-friendly interfaces, and are lightweight on hard drives. Many are super simple to set up, and some, like Proxy, don’t require installation. Others include a mobile component, which isn’t good for day-to-day work (lots of scrolling), but can be a lifesaver in a pinch. The good thing about them is that there are a lot of choices (also check out Hamanchi, CrossLoopand LogMeIn) that you gave use for free and try them out.

    Ted,

Gotta say that I side with Proxy in the battle of those companies you listed. I will always side with a program that can do the job of another, but does not require an install. The thing with many of these programs is that they just do not liek to be UNinstalled, so I choose not to install them at all.

The Internet is like alcohol in some sense. It accentuates what you would do anyway. If you want to be a loner, you can be more alone. If you want to connect, it makes it easier to connect.
