We’re in the final stretch to being ready to launch a brand new design for PCMech.com. I wanted to give you guys an update on what’s in store.
This is going to be a lot more than a re-design. While the entire scope of the project is a bit large, it is actually going to be a shift in how the site conducts itself. There will be editorial changes as well. Mind you, the PCMech that our long-time readers have known will remain, however we’re adding to it through some new directions in our content.
But, for now, let me show you a few things with the new design we’re working on. First, here is a chunk of our new header, complete with a new version of our logo…
Another issue we found with the site was that we had TONS of great stuff back in our article archives that people just don’t see unless they happen into it from the search engines. So, we’re devising a way to re-feature some of our past stuff and let you guys check it out again. Here is what that will look like:
Our premium membership program is going to be getting the 5-star treatment as well. Here is a partial shot of our new feature list for our members of PCMech Premium:
To go along with the new site, the forums will also be following suit. We are going to switch to a fixed-width layout, but one that makes much better use of space and should prove a welcome change to our members. Here’s a partial shot:
As I said, we’re in the final stretch on this. Still got some things to finish before we can start to implement this new design. Even once we begin, it will be a process. There is no instant-switch we can push to flip a site this big over to a new layout, so it will come in stages, with some follow-up fixes and content re-formatting to be done after the fact.
But, when it is complete, it’ll be nice.

All look like very good changes for the site. Especially like the top banner/logo re-design. The previous is/was a bit “dated”

I us PCMech shortly after it began, when I began building computers.
After years of no building, I now want information of what products are best for a certain computer use, video processing for example. I know how to build my own PC, I want details about the new computer parts.
Categories related to use (video, music, gaming, word processing, photography, etc.), computer building experience level, and financial constraints would be hand sticky links.
I used PCMech, not just “I us” – and “handy sticky links” – two typos at least.
Pardon me for not just deleting my comment, would if I could, or just editing it, would if I could….
Well, our content direction is going to be about what we can DO with our computers, gadgets and the Internet. Not so much about picking parts. We've hammered the “build your own” stuff already – time to take a new angle. The fact is that most people don't build computers anymore. They buy them and go buy new ones when they break. Its a commodity now.
I think it looks brilliant. The site has been helpful to me a number of times. Keep up the good work guys.

I started using PC Mech a couple of years ago and driffed away because I didn't care for the look of the website nor the complexity. This new look and easier layout makes it a far easier site to look through and find what you need/want! Great Job PC Mech!
Well, we're working on that. The “complexity” thing is always a balancing act with a site this big. So, hopefully you don't think the new one is too complex, too, once you see the entire thing.

Very impressive work- As a student has greatly got valuable stuff from this site. I agree now looks more impressive, i hope is not just because it is New . It offers short cuts to what you real need to know about computing

I have also been folowing you almost since you started, I think the layout is much better, I really like the ask Tech support, and the idea of easily back tracking on later issues also the live workshop.
I have always found something usefull from your e-mails, some good advice, so it will be great to have a better site to go with the good work you do..

I believe I've been following your site just about from its arrival on the web-scene. Yours was one of the sites I could trust to have the correct info when I needed it the most. I found the evolution and growth into maturity of you and your site. Well done!
Thoughts on the new look … I like it. Compliments on the handling of ads, etc. The amount of potential pop-up ads, etc. is still below the “threshold of pain” for an old geek like me. After all, ads are what pay the bills. Keep on being the PC guru you are … if you choose to “graduate into a buttoned-down collar and tie business man” … please, please, please hire a “replacement” for yourself with top-notch techie guru credentials … after all that's why I've stayed with you over the years.

The “professional touch” combined with the personal intimacy is what convinced me to become a premium subscriber.
The only thing that bothers me here is those annoying ads that pop up when you hover over underlined words. Yes, I realize it's an income source for you, but a less-irritating alternative would be greatly appreciated.
