FrozenCPU 540 Case

Getting the window installed takes very little effort. A complete set of instructions is included, and they are very helpful and well laid out. If you can install a floppy drive, then you can install the window kit.  All components needed for the installlation come with the kit -  machined side and top panels, plexiglas window kit, fans, and all molding. The case also contains a plethora of thumbscrews for convenience (a big plus), along with regular screws, washers and brass standoffs for attaching your motherboard. Also included is the back panel ATX form factor plate.

The case has rounded edges and is very sturdy. Not to mention all of the room inside. Plenty of room for you raid array, add-on tuner cards and the funky wiring mess we all make. With 3-5.25 bays and 2-3.25 external and 4-3.25 internal,  you will have plenty of room to work with. Tthat\’s one thing I like in a case - plenty of room.

The case also comes with some other great features, like BIG feet for stability, you don\’t want your pc tipping over at those ever productive LAN parties. And thumb screws, this case comes with thumbs screws for everything. No fumbling around with a screwdriver trying to get the side off of your case. The removable motherboard tray is another feature that we all have come to know and love. If you are always swapping stuff out, or frying your Tbird and replacing it, you will be grateful.

Now, let\’s check out how what this baby looks like when completed. The \”outer\” molding is very easy to install, as is the window itself. The \”locking\” molding, which is the smaller one, takes some effort and coaxing to get in. It is easier to do with some silicone spray or the like, otherwise, you will have a tough time getting it in place. And be careful not to cut your molding too short! \”Measure twice, cut once\”.  But once it\’s in, it\’s in. Fits like a glove. Be careful to note the direction you are placing the window in, whether or not you want your fan to be to the left, right, top or bottom. I actually had to take out my window and refit it, because my fan was touching my hard drive. So I just repositioned it to the left side of the window, and it worked great.

The actual putting together of my PC parts was the same as any other case. The removable motherboard tray made it a lot easier though. The interior space this case has makes it effortless when installing your hard drives and other peripherals.

Under full load, my cpu temp went to 115F. At idle it stayed constant at 100F. Not bad at all. As for the case temps, they stayed at 100F under full load, and dropped to 96F under idle. In total my temps dropped an average of 3F. My bezel gauges show Celsius temps. I have one on my scsi hard drive, which stayed around 37C. The other temp monitor I have just placed in an open part of the inside of the case, it read steady at 30C.  The pics of the gauges above are from a cold start. The gauges actually are battery powered, so they stay on constantly. Hope the batteries keep going, and going…

Noise, and how much it bothers us? Well, my previous case had 6 fans, from 60mm to 92mm. And I could hear it in my living room, if I leave my office door open. Kind of a pain. these twin 120mm fans are quiet. Surprised me. I really thought they would be as loud as the \”Blue Angels\” when at an air show, but they are not. They are smooth running and very tolerable, even in a very quiet room.

The rest of the story….

Good

  • Quality built
  • Removable motherboard tray
  • Thumbscrews, thumbscrews, thumbscrews
  • Plenty of room for ALL of your components
  • Very cool looking
  • Keeps components cool

Bad

  • Small locking molding is difficult to \”snap\” in, but silicone spray makes it easy.

So many great features that come with this case. The removable tray and plentiful thumbscrews make it so easy to assemble/disassemble. The quality in machining the pieces for a perfect fit and  fact that it comes with the cool plexi window mod and 120mm fans will make you the envy of all your pals. Well, maybe not, but your pc will look a lot cooler and be cooler than theirs.
