Funky Things Going On With YouTube

Over the past week there’s been some seriously funky stuff going on with the YouTube.com web site. And I’m not talking about cool funk like George Clinton. No. I mean funky in a bad way.

Video Uploading Follies

The first thing I noticed is that for uploaded videos, the quality has improved for newly posted videos. This is good.

The bad parts are that:

  1. When uploading the video via TubeMogul (a site many video producers use including myself), the video can take twice as long to appear on the YouTube site. Why? I have no idea.
  2. Using YouTube’s standard video upload process turned into an on-again/off-again thing. Several times I had to click the "If you have a problem with the uploader, click here.." link and yes, then it worked properly.
  3. A video would be uploaded, appear directly in the channel, but on click the system would state "This video is not available". How can a video be seen in a channel yet not be available right after being posted? No one knows; I certainly don’t.

Comment Follies

If you run into the situation where you try to post a comment and it doesn’t work, usually all you have to do is flush your browser cache and restart the browser. This is a universal standard thing to do no matter what OS you’re using.

However it would appear that the YouTube system for whatever reason would absolutely positively not accept comments.

Case in point:

Dave tried to post a comment on the pcmedianet channel. It didn’t work, and he’s using a Mac Pro.

I tried posting a comment on the same channel. I use Windows XP. That didn’t work either.

It’s not an OS issue or a browser issue. Something funky was going on with the site.

YouTube needs to fix the funk

I’m trying my best here to post videos and do that thing that I do with the video stuff, but I tell ya.. the funk in the YouTube system is seriously puts a hair in my Cream o’ Wheat. That’s a polite way of saying it pisses me off.

I work for TubeMogul and we were having issues with our upload tool last Friday due to Amazon S-3 being down, causing the slowness you point out (we’re sorry). Uploads should be back to full speed.

YouTube has also had some other issues lately, including video view counts being off.

Thanks for the heads up, Dave. We were wondering what the deal is over there at Youtube.

TubeMogul is unreliable POS. Once heyspread turns on their screenscrapers, they will be the place for uploads AND Stats!
