Gamer’s Corner: Using a PS3 with your Computer

It’s a fairly simple task to use a 360 controller on a PC. All you really need to do is plug it in, and download a few drivers from Microsoft’s website. But what if you don’t have a 360? What if you’ve got a PS3? No worries – while the process is certainly a bit more involved than setting up a 360 controller, it’s still not terribly difficult, all the same. You’ll just need to do a bit of configuring, and nab yourself some third party software in the process. Here’s what you’ll want to do:

Step One: Figure out your Windows Installation: In order to do this, go to the Windows Control Panel. Scroll down to System. Jot down your operating system and your Operating System Type (32 bit or 64 bit). This is important- the type of system you’re running will directly determine what drivers you’ll need to install.

Step Two: Download MotionInJoy: Pretty self-explanatory. Go to the MotionInJoy Website, seek out your operating system in the list, and download and install the necessary drivers for t.

Step Three: Plug In Your PS3 Controller: Once you do, you’ll see a small icon informing you that Windows is searching for the required drivers for the controller. At this point, open up the MotionInJoy Dualshock 3 application, and click on “Load Driver.” Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Step Four: Calibration: Open up your Device Menu (in Windows 7, this is accomplished by navigating to Hardware and Sound->Devices and Printers).   Look for HID-Compliant Controller, right click on it, and select “settings.” Finally, click on “properties” to perform the calibration.

That’s pretty much it. you should now be able to use your PS3 controller on your PC without any trouble, and even connect it to your system via Bluetooth. Pretty sweet, right? There’s a similar install process for older models of Playstation controller- though you’re going to need some specialized wiring to make it work.
