Garmin Introduces nuvi 5000 - It’s Big

Posted Jan 4, 2008 by Rich Menga

PhotoGarmin has a fairly wide range of sizes for mobile GPS devices. The newest one is the nuvi 5000.

This is a big guy; a 5.2-inch touchscreen display. Not only is it big but it also has the highest resolution screen I’ve seen so far from Garmin, that being 800×480. This is actually higher than the larger-screened super-big StreetPilot 7500 that has a 480×234 resolution.

If you’re into GPS and think "Wow.. big screen. Cool..", don’t be so quick to want one if your vehicle doesn’t have the real estate to physically fit it in there.

Units like these are meant for big vehicles, such as RV’s. The reason is because if this was placed anywhere on the windshield or dashboard of a smaller car it would be a huge obstruction (i.e. blocks a good chunk of your view when driving).

Nice to see Garmin puts out the super-size units, but a unit like the 5000 can only be used by a select audience because.. well.. it’s just too darn big for a regular car.

However, given the choice between the big StreetPilot 7500 and the nuvi 5000, I’d take the 5000 first because of the higher resolution screen.
