By now most if not all who read this have tried automotive GPS at some point, either by owning a GPS device yourself, maybe trying it in a rental car, using it through a cell phone app or what-have-you.
"Basic GPS" when it comes to a car basically means that all the device does is route. It does not do Bluetooth, meaning it won’t pair to a phone. It does not do traffic reports. It does not play MP3s or do any other multimedia stuff. It does not have any frilly useless features. All the thing does is what it’s supposed to do – route, and route properly.
The new 30, 40 and 50 series nüvi GPS units from Garmin are just that. Budget-priced, easy-use interface, awesome routing ability and it just plain works.
Now before continuing, bear in mind basic units like this aren’t just for the budget-minded. Over the years, even those with deep pockets that have ritzy Android phones or iPhones actually prefer the Garmin simply for the fact it’s more convenient and does a better job at routing. The convenience comes in the fact a standalone GPS isn’t interrupted by phone calls. As for routing, nothing does real-time navigation better than a dedicated standalone Garmin GPS.
Why is the 50LM the "perfect" basic GPS?
The nüvi 50LM is as close to basic GPS perfection as you can get for the following 4 reasons:
- It’s a Garmin.
- It has a 5-inch screen.
- The "LM" means lifetime map updates – free.
- It’s well under $200.
This is the one people have been waiting for. Basic, easy-to-use, big-but-not-too-big screened, free map updates, stellar routing ability, priced right – and you simply can’t do much better than that.
