If you are aspiring to be a bit more “geeky” with your Windows system, there are no better tools than the Sysinternals Suite of utilities. Two of the most powerful are Process Explorer and Process Monitor which give you incredible insight into what your system in doing.
When you first use these tools, you may not know exactly what you are looking at or you just may simply be overwhelmed with where to start. So to get you acquainted with using these excellent utilities take a look at this presentation: Windows Sysinternals Primer. The video is just over an hour and covers basic functionality and use cases for these tools but is an excellent way to learn what you can do.
I use these tools almost daily and have learned a great deal about many things which has helped in everything from development to troubleshooting. So if you have the time and interest, this video is highly recommended.
