I loved Geocities. It allowed me to create a whole website from scratch without having to pay for domain, bandwidth, etc. I always wanted to make real websites, and this allowed me to do so. True , the bandwidth per website was small, but I simply started a new Geocities account, for a new topic, and there it was.

No I am going to have to save all that content, over 10 years worth, cululative, and move it to my main website if I want to keep it. and I do. Some of it actually got me business, and made me money, and people even today refer to it for information.

<<>>

Hmm, someone should start some type of a "save geocities," petition, just for archiving purposes. Is there any way to get the wayback machine extra involved? Perhaps start some type of "save geocities," library for old web enthusiasts? Is it possible for someone to buy everything on the servers for strictly archiving purposes?

It is important to have an archive of what was on the web at a particular time and what webpages looked like. 20, 30, 40 years from now the contents of archives can be priceless from a historical standpoint.

Archiving costs somebody money. So is the old content something people are going to be willing to pay for? I kinda doubt it with the "everything should be free" mentality that most people have with respect to the internet.

The content will go away unfortunately, unless someone finds a brilliant way of eliminating the libraries operating costs. I don't see that happening.
