Gmail Filters 101: How To Use Them

Recently, I’ve been getting a string of annoying emails to my Gmail account from a rather odd fellow who claims to be representing some royal from another country. Apparently, they’ve got $50 million that they want to invest overseas, and I’ve been chosen as a prime candidate for the investment. Of course, I’ll get a cut of it.

Obviously, I’ve been pointedly ignoring the email. It helps that it goes straight to my “Spam” folder. But this gentleman, he’s rather more persistent than most. He’s already re-sent the message no less than five times in as many days. I take my spam folder rather seriously, and I’d rather keep it clear of such junk. Thus, I set out to set up a filter which would automatically delete any emails I happened to get from him.

It’s quite simple. Let me show you how I did it.

Step 1: Access your “Settings” Menu

See the little gear up in the top right corner of your inbox? Click on it, then click “Settings” on the drop-down menu that appears.

Step 2: Go to the “Filters” Tab

Pretty self explanatory. Along the top of the page you’re taken to after clicking “Settings,”

Step 3: Create your Filter

Click on “Create a filter.” From here, you modify pretty much every aspect of how Gmail manages your incoming messages. Want a filter that marks every email that contains the word “Elephant” as important? Enter the word into the subject line on the menu that pops up, then click on “Create a new filter with this search” on the bottom right. That’s it! You’re done! Enjoy your new filters.

Step 4(Optional): Updating Filters

If you’re setting up a blocklist with a filter(in other words, one that automatically deletes their messages the moment they enter the inbox), you can add more emails a filter that already exists, rather than having to create a new filter. Simply click the “edit” line next to the filter, and add comma next to any emails that are already a part of the filter, and type in an additional email message. Pretty simple, right?

Why do you get that email? I get that same one and I thought I was the only prime candidate. :)
