Google seems to be on a roll lately. They have been issuing a constant barrage of improvements to Google Gmail. This time, it is multiple inboxes.
As with almost all of their changes of late, this new one is found in the Gmail Labs. So, head to Settings –> Labs and activate it. What you get will look something like this:
As you can see, I have two new inboxes off to the right. The good news is that you can alter the settings to put the additional boxes above or below the main inbox. You can also customize what appears in those inboxes. So, if you want a particular label or a particular search to show up there, you can do it.
In my eyes, this is one of the more useful additions to Gmail in recent months. In my case, I have several different email addresses all feeding into my Gmail account. I make use of the Gmail filters to label and archive emails from different email addresses. With this new feature, I can actually display on screen the different email accounts I have as if they were different accounts.
This is a great productivity enhancement for Gmail.
At this point, I will go on record as saying you are a technology relic if you don’t use Gmail. ISP-based email is too limiting. Hotmail and Yahoo Mail just don’t keep up with Google in terms of new features added. So, when it comes to email, Google is the place to be right now if you like seeing enhancements.

Rich, your counter review?
I’ve been looking for a “multiple email addresses to a single inbox” solution for a while but so far none offer what I feel is most important: Optional password protection for access to each inbox. The reason is simple: You may very well allow someone to access one of your email inbox but not necessarily want that person to see messages from other inboxes. I hope Google unlike others understands that…
Hey Dave – is that screen shot of Gmail within your browser or via an email client?
