GnuCash Works On Windows Too

Posted Jun 5, 2008 by Jason Faulkner

Users of Linux who like to use a dedicated program to keep track of their personal finances or run a small business are probably familiar with GnuCash. What Windows users might not be aware of, is that it now works on their OS as well.

If you are not familiar with it, GnuCash is a viable open source replacement for Quicken/MS Money on Windows and “adequate” when compared to QuickBooks. GnuCash is a rich double-entry accounting program which supports importing of QIF as well as OFX files to make data entry easy. You can read about the features as well as see screenshots on their web site.

For reasons I will not go into on this post, I have recently moved from Quicken Home & Business 2007 to GnuCash and found it does everything I need: invoices, reports and reminders. If you are in the market for an accounting program, GnuCash is definitely worth a look.

Which Of These Traits Applies To YOUR Computing Life?...

It takes ~10 minutes to start up for me. From reading bug reports it appears to be a Windows issue b/c of how GNUCash communicates across ports within Windows. This keeps it from being an option for me. I think the GNUCash team needs to address this known issue before declaring its product to be Windows compatible.

    Hi,
Would like to know which file should be downloaded for use with Windows Vista. I downloaded gnucash 2.2.5 tar.gz then extracted using PowerArchiver 2001 and while in the archiver it shows it in folder gnucash below program files when I explore for it nothing is there. I backed up the chain in the archiver and found it was put in documents/user/me/temp/gnucash but windows will not explore to that folder. I’m sure it’s a permission thing or defender maybe. What did I do wrong? I’m the only user and never messed with the permissions setup, quite frankly they leave me cross-eyed and cranky.
    Thanks,
    debbie

You want the Windows binary files (.exe).
It sounds like you downloaded the source files instead.
