In order for the automotive industry to get more of the stuff we use on the internet into cars, that stuff must by design assist us with doing the one thing we do most in cars: Driving.
Mercedes-Benz is doing just that.
A new feature in Mercedes-Benz cars is called “Search and Send,” and said honestly it’s a sensible way of using the power of internet search in your car. This feature allows you to find destinations on the internet using Yahoo or Google and then literally send that information to the MB’s navigation system.
The process of how to send your destinations to the car is the cool part because there are several ways to do it:
- When sitting at your computer, you find the destinations you want, then just click “Send to car.”
- Load up destinations in your PDA, and send to the car that way.
- Others (with your permission) can send you directions while you’re in the car.
A little button simply labeled “i” allows destinations to be downloaded directly to the nav system.
Cool, eh? Oh yes it is.
Anyone who knows me personally already is aware I’m a huge GPS navigation freak. This is the reason I have a Garmin StreetPilot c580 hooked up with MSN Direct service. But I totally admit that having the ability to send destinations to your car from your computer without the need to physically connect one to the other is just plain frickin’ cool. And very useful because it’s stupidly easy. Easy is good.
