Here in New Zealand now, they seem to love to give you the runaround, whereas beforehand, as long as you had proof of purchase and it was within the warranty period they'd simply just give you a new one off the shelf. they'd then take the broken/damaged/faulty one, fix it and sell it again at cut price.
