PCMech is based out of Tampa Bay, Florida, and I’m also a Florida resident, so when particular news for this area come across the wire I see it periodically. For non-US readers, US states are divvied up into counties (and then municipalities which are cities, towns, boroughs and sometimes villages). Hillsborough County is directly within the Tampa Bay area.
Hillsborough is installing new electric car charging stations. This means one who actually buys an electric car has a place other than their residence to, you know, charge the thing when needed. The first one will be located at a library.
According to the press release:
This effort, led by Commissioner Mark Sharpe, District 7 Countywide, serves to develop infrastructure for increased electric vehicle use by consumers seeking cleaner and cheaper energy alternatives. Commissioner Sharpe stated, “This effort supports both business and consumer needs, while moving us toward energy independence.” Various local car dealerships are already bringing electric vehicles to their show room floors, and even more have plans to bring electric vehicles into stock.
The Tampa area moves a lot of cars – and I mean a lot. There are so many cars here it’s just plain ridiculous. Every make and model you could possibly think of is sold here – and this obviously includes hybrid-electrics.
Those who buy electric cars now have more options where to charge in Hillsborough, and that’s good. With a smartphone you’ll also be able to use this to locate the nearest station.
It’s good to see Hillsborough getting a little greener by taking a rather large forward step with electric car charging stations.

I sure hope taxpayers in Hillsborough county are NOT shelling out taxmoney for this waste of time. Plus commercial vehicle fees (taxes) should NOT be used for this either…. Let the electric car people pay for this..
