Pretty much all keyboards today come with the Windows key on them. This key is actually quite useful on Windows machines as way to launch shortcuts and, of course, open the Windows Start menu. So to add similar functionality and have the Windows key open your Ubuntu Applications menu, just run this command from the console:
gconftool-2 –set /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/panel_main_menu –type string “Super_L”
The command above is courtesy of this article which points out that trying to configure your system to use the Windows key for this function via the normal keyboard assignment screen doesn’t work.
