How to Host a LAN Party

Invite and Conquer

Sending out the invitations isn’t really that big of a deal. I usually request that all who come to my parties to do the following:

  • Scan their computer for viruses

  • Make sure they have all the appropriate games and subsequent files

  • Disable file-sharing and any software firewalls

  • Enable a screensaver with password

And bring the following:

  • Computer

  • Monitor

  • All necessary cables and accessories

  • Game CDs

  • Headphones

  • Power Strip

I have also found bringing a few pillows to put on the chair helps the long hours of sitting. Also, a fan is very nice, even if the room is cool. When it comes to times, be very specific about when you want them over and when you want them out.

Shake It Baby (Party Time)

Assuming you have used common sense and this guide, your party should go smoothly. Before people start arriving, set up all the tables and chairs, extension cables, network supplies. Test the network; make sure your router is set up properly, internet working, and all ports on your hubs/switches functioning. I find playing light techno while people arrive is nice and sets the mood before the real fun begins. Let your attendees know where the food and the bathroom are. Explain that the noise level needs to be kept to a minimum; I have had neighbors call and complain. If computer troubles arise, and believe me, it will sooner or later, use common sense; don’t re-install video card drivers when it’s a network issue.

Post Mortem (After the Party)

Clean up the mess, and following that, sleep the sleep of god himself. I would say anywhere from 6 to 14 hours is about right. A few days after you have recovered from your party, ask how your attendees liked the party and ask how you could improve it. Feedback tends to help a lot for the next party, and also assures your friends that they have some sort of say as to what happens.

* This article assumes you already know how to set up a basic home network. If you don’t know how to set a basic network, I suggest consulting the slightly outdated Basic LAN Tutorial.
