It is not necessary to reboot the computer after installing nvidia drivers.
You should do:
1º Exit your session
2º Press Ctrl+Alt+F1
3º Login
4º Type sudo /etc/rc4.d/S30gdm stop
5º Press enter
6º Type sudo /etc/rc4.d/S30gdm start
That’s it.

Great!
A good follow-up for this would be instructions for those stuck with non-functional (under linux) dialup connections. I tried the nvidia drivers, but it wants the source tree, which I dont have.
The past couple of days, I’ve been hunting for the NVIDIA-drivers-for-ubuntu.deb packages, but so fat didnt find them. Can anyone give me a link to somewhere in the repository (for 7.10) where they reside? Thanx.
By the way, kdaskh, great tip. That’s something every *nix user should know. It took me two weeks to figure it out myself.

Thanks a lot for video. I did the same thing but I am getting the following error:
Cannot install ‘nvidia-glx-legacy’
This application conflicts with other installed software. To install ‘nvidia-glx-legacy’ the conflicting software must be removed first.
Switch to the ’synaptic’ package manager to resolve this conflict.
