When using an IMAP-connected email account in Microsoft Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook or Windows Live Mail, there is the option to "mark to download" or "download later" if using IMAP in such a way where the messages aren’t cached locally. When you do this, you’re instructing the mail client to download a block of messages that you selected and only those messages.
In Mozilla Thunderbird, the ability to do this exists without having to physically open each email message individually. It’s very easy once you know how to do it.
Step 1. Select at least 2 messages in a message list
For this function to appear you have to have a bare minimum of 2 emails selected, like this:

Step 2. "Get Selected Messages"
Right-click the selection. From the context menu that pops up, select Get Selected Messages and the messages will download locally.

If that option is grayed out for whatever reason, click (from the top left of the client) File > Offline > Get Selected Messages, like this:
