How To Short-Link A Google Maps Address

I’ve written about this before, but the way Google Maps does this now is totally different from my previous documentation on the subject (text was replaced with button and moved to the left instead of on the right).

It’s very common that people send links to mapped addresses (and/or routes) all the time, and it’s also common that the links going to these places are huge. Google Maps introduced a short-link feature a while ago, and you can use it without having a Google Account.

How to use it is as follows:

1. Go to Google Maps at maps.google.com.

2. Punch in an address or establish a from/to route.

3. Click the link button:

link-button

4. Click the “Short URL” checkbox to place a check in it:

5. Copy and paste the short URL:

short-url

Use the short URL in email, instant message, Facebook or wherever you wish.

And unfortunately, no, you cannot choose the name of the link. Google Maps will choose that randomly for you.
