Facebook by and large is the way people send instant messages to each other these days. Many people hate Facebook but use it just for the chat function to chat with friends.
Fortunately, you DO NOT have to login to facebook.com at all to chat on that system due to the fact the system uses XMPP. What this means is that there are many ways to chat on all platforms (including mobile); there’s even a way to do it from a Linux terminal session if you wanted.
