So, you’re probably aware that you can either stream or directly load media files onto your Xbox 360 or Playstation 3. It’s a pretty handy feature. Say you’ve got yourself a movie, or a television series that you’ve purchased in digital format. Rather than having to watch it on the small screen of your computer or laptop you can set them up to run on your television. Very much preferable, no?
Now, there’s one small problem with this plan- mkv files won’t run on either system. Of course, this problem is very, very easily remedied – all you have to do is convert the files.
Step One: Download Any Video Converter. The free version should provide all the features you’ll need.
Step Two: Load the files you want to convert into the program’s interface.
Step Three: Ensure your profile (it’s shown in the top right corner) is set to convert videos to Avi.
Step Four: Click “Convert”
Now, for the second step, you can either copy the videos onto an external USB and pop it into one of the drives on your console, or set up a remote media server. In the case of the latter:
Step One: Ensure that your console is connected to your home network.
Step Two: Select the [Media Sharing] option from the [Library] menu.
Step Three: Check the box next to “Share Media”
Step Four: Select your console from the list of devices. Note that it might be listed as an unknown device- as far as I know, there’s no way to avoid if it is.
Step Five: Copy whatever files you want to share into your “My Videos” folder.
Step Six: If you’re having trouble sharing the content, the problem may be caused by your antivirus software. I know that Avast’s on access shields for one, tend to interfere with Media Sharing. You may need to disable them in order to successfully watch shared media.
Step Seven: That’s it, you’re done! Enjoy your videos!

PS3 Media Server is a good choice for streaming to your PS3. It will also transcode mkv files on the fly. For larger files it is recommended to be on a wired network, but should still work ok on wireless.
