I Don’t Think My Home Needs An Operating System

homeos Home automation is something that I’ve never quite agreed with. I’m not against advances in technology, but I am against things that serve no genuinely good purpose.

An example of this is HomeOS, which Microsoft is currently testing, and will eventually lead to the "smart house".

My primary reason I disagree with the idea of a smart house is mainly because the technology already exists (and has for some time) to automate pretty much everything in your home already. Those of you who are familiar with ultra-modern central air/heat systems know exactly what I’m talking about. You can "zone" everything and micromanage the temperatures of individual rooms to very specific degrees, such as the kitchen being 72F and the bedroom being 68F. And yes, you can get that specific. You can also set up scheduling and all that good stuff as well.

I suppose I can see the potential of having a central OS controlling it all, but that would probably mean a homeowner would have to buy specific equipment that’s "compatible" with said OS.

Sorry, but I see no cost savings in that, and that’s a step backwards.

I could be wrong, however. Do you think a "smart house" is a good idea?

Charlie Chaplin had it all in Modern Times already. Did not work out too well then.

Besides causing hardware and appliance manufacturers to keep up with it, I dislike this idea of future technology for the same reasons I dislike current technology. It’s marketed to people who have no idea what the underlying structure of the tech is like and will therefore use it improperly.

Enjoy your home-virus. Oh and it can do a lot worse than wipe your data. Try house fires, cosmic electricity bills, never REALLY knowing if that “lock all doors” command went through…

On the other hand, when MS finally pushes me to go Linux-only, I will literally be able to say that I run a Linux household.

what bothers me about this push is your home will now be watching you and with new laws saying corporations have to hand over any info on you if asked  . they will be handing the government keys to your house via the web

I don’t care at all for the idea of  a house that periodically crashes where then nothing works.  Computers are enough of a pain in the ass in that respect.

How do you restart your home after it crashes?
