When it comes to self hosted blog packages, WordPress is probably the most well known and widely used. While WordPress can be run on any web server, it is specifically developed to be deployed on Apache web servers. So for those of you who use Windows hosts and want a fully featured blog platform, take a look at BlogEngine.NET.
BlogEngine.NET is an open source .NET blogging project that was born out of desire for a better blog platform. A blog platform with less complexity, easy customization, and one that takes advantage of the latest .NET features.

Out of the box, BlogEngine.NET supports SEO URL’s as well as XML/SQL Server/MySQL backends which makes it supported on any Windows host. I have recently started using this package for one of my projects and am very impressed. It has just about everything I used in WordPress and is a breeze to work with. Yes, it even supports Live Writer.
Again, while WordPress can certainly be run on IIS, it is not the target platform so you do have to do some work to enable features such as SEO URL’s. So for Windows hosts, BlogEngine.NET is a great alternative if you don’t want to have to worry about these things.
