Here at PC Mechanic, we have worked with Uniblue for a few years now off and on. Uniblue has been an occasional sponsor here at PCMech, and we have operated as a Uniblue affiliate in the past. Uniblue is the creator of several utilities one often sees marketed online, including Registry Booster, SpeedUpMyPC, WinTasks, and SpyEraser.
Commonly seen advertised with these utilities are free scans. These free scans are small applications which will scan your computer looking for outpoints. In order to repair any of the issues it finds, you would need to purchase the full version. Some of our users have reported issues removing the free scan software. Others have reported issues in getting in touch with Uniblue regarding their order. These complaints were, by no means, rampant compared to the quantity of business done, however it was enough to take notice. For this reason, we were interested in tossing a few questions at Uniblue in the form of an interview. We wanted to get their direct take on some of these issues and learn a little more about the company.
Below is my interview of Johan Malmberg, VP of Product Strategy at Uniblue Systems.
1.Can you give me a brief history of Uniblue? How many employees does Uniblue have and where are you located?
CEO, Bosse Malmberg, launched Uniblue in 2003 with a clear vision to bring simplicity and clarity, and maybe a dash of fun, to the two unnecessarily complicated, yet essential, fields of PC security and performance. Uniblue employs around 70 staff and is based in Malta, a country in the central Mediterranean, where IT is a driving force and English is an official language.
2.Uniblue products are all sold online, correct? Any movement toward shelf-available software?
That’s correct, yes. Our eCommerce partner, Digital River Inc. handles the majority of our online transactions. We are going to continue with an online emphasis, as the model works extremely well for us, however RegistryBooster is available to buy in stores across the USA, and we will soon have a presence in Europe too.
3.What kind of resources does Uniblue use to stay on top of Windows processes, spyware threats and other changes in the industry that affect your products?
We offer a free tool at our site www.processlibrary.com; ProcessScanner scans a user’s PC, and as well as providing users with information on what is running on their PC, it also helps us to stay on top of new processes and threats as they appear. When a new process, threat or DLL is identified, it is passed to a team of dedicated reviewers who conduct in-depth research and analysis and then update the ProcessLibrary database on a daily basis with any new findings.
4.What kind of testing procedures does Uniblue have in place to ensure that products like Registry Booster do not mess up users’ computers? How do you guard against false positives?
Once a product is ready for release, then it goes into our fully equipped “Test Lab”, where it’s rigorously tested on a wide variety of hardware, supported Windows Operating Systems and on a number of virtual machines. The product is only released when we are 100% satisfied that it meets all criteria. We eliminate false positives during scans by drawing on our extensive research with ProcessLibrary, and also work with our vendor partners in this area. We always aim to cast the widest net possible to keep up-to-date on these issues.
5.What is your policy on online advertising and spam? Some of our users have reported getting spammed by Uniblue. PC Mechanic has advertised for Uniblue in the past and I know we are not spamming anyone, but I cannot speak for any other places where you guys may advertise. Do you place controls over the activity of your affiliates and monitor their activities?
Here at Uniblue, we have strict anti-spam policies which comply with anti-spam laws. We do not send spam, nor do we tolerate it – in any way – from any affiliate. All affiliates are mentored and monitored by account managers, who discuss with them how they will promote our products. If something falls outside our policy, then we do not allow them to utilize the method in question. Also, our affiliates must gain approval from us before they undertake activities concerning our products. Additionally, all affiliates sell through One Network Direct, a Digital River company, with an excellent reputation in the field of affiliate marketing which also imposes its own rigorous standards on affiliates.
6.Some of our users have reported difficulties in removing the free system scan software from their computers. Is there anything done to the free evaluation versions of your software that is designed to make them difficult to uninstall? How do you respond to these users. And what is the different between the free scans and the full versions?
We are aware that some users who utilized trial versions (free scans) had difficulty in uninstalling the software. This wasn’t intentional, and this was caused by the fact that the software was running in the System Tray when the user tried to delete the program. This wasn’t clear to many users, and, once alerted, we acted on it immediately. In response, we have developed a new feature which closes the program automatically when the user starts to uninstall. These free scans are diagnostic; RegistryBooster alerts the user to any potential problems in the registry, and SpeedUpMyPC tells the user if their PC performance can be improved. Clients can then install the full versions to actually fix any identified issues.
7.Some of our users have reported issues getting in touch with Uniblue to deal with support or billing questions. Can you please provide full details on how customers can contact Uniblue support to deal with issues with their purchases?
We have recently re-launched the Uniblue.com website, with clear and simple navigation. Our support team handle all inquiries from prospective and current customers. There has always been a dedicated section for support on the website, but it’s even clearer on the new website: www.liutilities.com/support/. The company’s Contact page also directs you straight to support. The FAQs on the support section of the website are updated constantly to reflect the most common questions asked by our customers.
8.Does Uniblue have direct ways for customers to interact with your development team? For example, reporting unknown Windows processes, new spyware threats, or perhaps unknown results on registry scans?
Yes – all queries sent to support are logged, and any to do with development are forwarded to the QA team who will investigate further and then compile a bug or to-do list for the development team. Sometimes fixes may take a while to be uploaded, as we tend to release a number of them in a single upgrade to the version. Any suggestions about possible enhancements to our products are reviewed carefully by the product strategy department. If anyone wished to get in contact, please go to the support section of the website: www.liutilities.com/support/ticket/ , and create a ticket.
9.How has Uniblue been dealing with the release of Windows Vista? Has Vista been any kind of a curveball for Uniblue or is the transition for Uniblue’s products fairly seamless?
New operating systems always present a challenge for software companies, and we were gearing up for Vista for quite some time. RegistryBooster 2, SpeedUpMyPC 3, SpyEraser and PowerSuite are all Vista compatible, and the biggest test was ensuring that they were all OK on the new OS. That was quite a job for our QA team. Being a Microsoft Certified Gold Partner certainly helps when faced with such a transition.
10.Lastly, I thank you for fielding a few tough questions. Can we end off by having you tell us about any future plans for Uniblue. What can we expect from Uniblue as we end the year and move into 2008?
Thanks, David for giving us the opportunity to speak to you. The coming months into the next year will be an exciting period for us. ProcessLibrary is being re-launched on a faster platform, and in several other languages – French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. WinTasks is being launched as a totally new product called TaskForce, and www.localcooling.com – the free initiative for PC Users to fight climate change – is coming out of Beta. We are continually striving to improve existing products and offerings, and we have several new products in the development stage.

dear uniblue, I have bought and paid for uniblue registry booster 2 windows xp/2000/vista 32-bit download plus a system tweaker, and there is no sign of this soft ware on my computer it is paid for as I have the invoice can you sort this for me re gards Ian
I purchaces the speedup and tweeker programs and copied the the regristration number, closed out window when going into program regristrayion the programs and lost the regristration number and cannot open programs. How can I get the products regristration number? Order # 5489044
Same as the above poster – Ian.
Downloaded the regsitry cleaner and paid for it , wish i never had, however the System tweaker that was supposed to be free, is not there. They say that you have to go through the entire shopping experience again following their link, insane. long story.
I’ll make it brief. They try to sell the product, including one thy dont have. Then give you bogus links to follow. adding more stuff to buy. Bad hoax, man I’m a nervous.
Oh, how I wish they didn’t have my credit card number. I told them they had 24 hours to resolve the issue, if not I would tsrat posting. Have heard nothing from them.
Too late now
Alright,
They did answer within 24 hours to the above claim, and yes they did provide the missing software in a curteous manner.
If you need the link , just email them and thew will send it Ian. They might even have updated their page at their website.
So Uniblue is alright after all it seems!

After having tried the demonstration version of SpeedUpMyComputer 3, I ordered the full version and paid US$ 28.69 for it two weeks ago. This was confirmed ten days later and they gave me a ten-digit order number and an eleven-digit customer number. All I have now is the same stupid demonstrtaion number, where I can sometimes discover what looks like a download instruction. The window that follows asks either for a serial number or a personal code, or both, neither of which I have been provided with. So I fill in whatever number I have been given, with no effect apart from a clickable instruction which says: “purchase now”. I have purchased, damn it, and I want to receive a usable version of what I paid for.
This thing is a downright HOAX. Don’t be misled.
If I do’t hear from UniBlue within 10 days, this letter will go on my blog. (Where GOOGLE will find it without failure.)
I posted the following on Process Library Forum and got no response. I’m entering it here in the hopes it can get to someone who has an answer. I entered it here because you seem to have a relationship with Uniblue, if it is out of place I appologize;
I loaded the Uniblue process scanner but the list of processes doesn’t match the list of processes I see in Task Manager.
I know Uniblue process scanner put them in alphabetical order but there are processes in Task Manager that don’t show up in the process scanner report.
Shouldn’t it?
My above comment of 18 March now appears over-reacted. After several additional attempts I have finally managed to download the SpeedUpMyComputer3 software ordered on 11 March. Most of the time was spent on finding the link to download the program from. Uniblue does not make this an easy task. The greatest drawback is that, at first sight, the trial version is a spitting image of the real one, so that one does not always know in which of the two one has ended up. Non-clickable keys with text that doesn’t seem to be relevant don’t help. Anyway, all’s well that ends well. Adspirant customers, be prepared!

I sympathize with the people who did not get anything for their money. Although I had no trouble downloading the “full version,” I still got nothing for my money. The product accomplished nothing. No boost. No value.
When does this stop? I downloaded successfully but I too cannot see any improvement in my PC, just that Uniblue’s product bogged down my PC so badly that I had to do the no-no of shutting off the power strip to get out of it. And then – that little bit about “you’ll continue to be charged unless you ask to be taken off” – NOT cool. I”m putting this charge into dispute when it comes on my credit card, and I will be keeping all correspondence with a reminder on my calendar if I get another charge from this latest sham. Sigh.
Either I’m too stupid to have a computer or Uniblue lied about fixing their free registry booster 2 program to uninstall easily. My dell XPS 400 blew a video card and casused mucho other problems getting up again. When I was downloading video drivers from INVIVIA, I downloaded Uniblues software hoping to speed the registry. I still have it. Six Dell Support techs and one qualxserve tech, and myself can’t get rid of it with out a reformat of my C: drive. This program is serious bad news. Stay far away.
Anyone kow how to uninstall Uniblue Driver Scanner? I ran uninstall from Control Panel, which took me to their uninstall wizard. It uninstalled 2008 then w/out interruption reinstalled 2009. Upon completion I tried to uninstall via Cont.Pan again and get a window stating “An error occurred during uninstallation. The program may be already unistalled. Would you like to remove from the Remove Program List.” RIGHT! But I can go right to All Programs and start the program. It’s not gone and I can’t remove it. HELP!!!
No real complaints about the program I purchase from Uniblue. However, when I received a notice that I needed to pay a yearly fee to continue certain services. This did not sit well with me.
I understand the cost of doing business, but this is creating a cash cow for Uniblue and I am not willing to support.
Not so happy Uniblue customer.
Uniblue power suite 2009 crashed my computer! What a joke, no help from them in restoring my computer. I am outraged by this product!
I sent Uniblue my software registration information on SpeedUpMyPC3 and RegistryBooster2. I asked them to clarify what is going on with the updates and support; and received a “canned” reply offering annual fees to continue using their software bought recently. My preply follows:

Uniblue Customer Service
I appreciate your generous offer; but, decline. I have removed all Uniblue products from my computer.
I am, reasonably, sure that this response is not the first that you have received declining extortion as a method for continued services and upgrades.
Since receiving your response, I have investigated concerns for this approach. None appear favorable for your marketing effort, nor reputation.
Please, consider me an unhappy former user; and, this email as notice. I will not accept any more offers utilizing these practices.

I purschased the Uniblue system a couple of weeks ago. I have
a problem in that I accidently deleted my copy of the purchase
order form that showed that I paid along with order number and
the registration number. I tried to activate the system; but
without the numbers; the system is useless. Could you customer service departmant please send me a copy of the order
form that I need? Thank you.
Run away from this company. I have the PowerSuite that freezes up. It is impossible to get updates from the website. You can not look up your serial number that is required to get support. It is impossible to speak with a human. Everything is offshore and addressed via website. Their website is anti-customer so good luck with that. This is the most NOT Web 2.0 compnay I have encountered. I am trying to cancel my account but they don’t provide a capability to do this. RUN AWAY!
Please, Please Please! Cancel this order# 4590622 I have given up, impossibable to get up dates, freezes up.. Help!!
Thank you in advance with your support. Sharon
it looks like another scam.
i paid the price and got the full version .
after running all the way i CANNOT notice any change whatsoever in my comp.
i get no response from uniblue so i am simply not paying my card and they can fight it out.
another junk interbet product
tom
It is my belief that they show phony problems to get users to sign up for the full version.
I believe that Uniblue was responsible for hacking my email account and God knows what else( identity theft?). Wish I hadn’t fallen for it, no speed improvement from them, but later discovered how to reformat my harddrive, and wow. Goodbye UNIBLUE
Great program. I recomend it and see huge improvement. I think these other people have other problems. Its not a virus remover!
I have through your “interview” with Johan Malmberg. You may have succeeded in instilling confidence in potential customers, but this will change quickly once they have problems with the programs. Specifically, I downloaded the Driver Scanner 2009 trial software and decided to uninstall it. No luck. Why don’t you see what the system says when you try to contact support through XP’s Add?Remove.
I have already sent three tickets to Uniblue, using their form. Their promised 24 hour response is for the birds. I have yet to receive a response. I think you owe it to the people who read your publication to “review” your “interview”.
I too cannot get rid of Uniblue. Many years ago and a couple of computers back I used uniblue and liked it. Now I am uneasy because I cannot get it to uninstall my current computer started messing up shortly after the install. Also when I went to pay for this version it shifted to some company in Germany. I can no longer recommend this product be very careful in using their free scan.
I Bought Uniblue Speed Up My PC on 6/4/2009. It did nothing useful at all. I Requested a refund the day I bought it. There is allegedly a 30 money-back guarantee. I RECEIVED NO RESPONSE TO MANY REQUESTS FOR A REFUND over the next few months. This company is obviously not actually certified by Microsoft, as they claim to be. My order number for the purchase is: 6101760.
