I think that this is a common misconception among many pc users. Even if you are cloud-dependeent, you *do not* have to be connected to the internet to get work done on a computer.

For instance, my work mostly involves writing, editing, and formatting, most of which I do offline. However, everything I do offline is backed up and synced in at least 3 places online and/or offline. Anyone who has had their hard drive go suddenly fubar on them can perhaps relate to this desire?

Being able to send/receive what is needed/wanted regardless of location really depends on one's lifestyle. Most of my family and friends could not care less or would adamantly refuse to be cloud-dependent, but then they all have traditional jobs and lifestyles, so such a choice would not even take up any brain space in their day-to-day lives.

It all depends...everyone has to weigh the pros and cons for themselves. For some it's ideal, for others it's completely unrealistic.

I agree with everything you said, however, as a very cloud-friendly and cloud-addicted, self-employed business of 1, I still plan to get this. I have been gladly "clouding it" for well over a year and would not go back for...well, let's just say it would take a lot to convince me to go backwards.

I have discovered that between my cloud-dependent netbook and my smart phone, I have everything I need and pretty much want. But...I perfectly understand that I am very much in the minority among computer users because of my independent lifestyle.

Of course, the average computer user requires and/or prefers the more traditional, secure, and convenient methods of computer use. If I still had my traditional job, I would not practically be able to be strictly cloud-dependent.

The Chromebook doesn't have to be for anyone. As a device that's easy to use and starts up fast, it's ideal for use as a second computer, or for casual use around the house.

There are even solutions for accessing Windows applications. For example, Ericom AccessNow is an HTML5 RDP client that enables Chromebook users to connect to Terminal Server or VDI virtual desktops, and run Windows applications (like MS Office) or even full desktops in a browser tab. So even if you purchase a Chromebook for casual home use, you can also use it to connect to your work applications if necessary.
